Zonta International is a world-wide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. Zonta International was founded on November 18th, 1919 in Buffalo, New York. There are more than 34,000 members in 1,229 local clubs in approximately 71 countries and geographical areas around the world. The name "Zonta International" was officially adopted at the 1930 Convention in Seattle, Washington, USA, and in September of that year Zonta was incorporated under that name in the state of Illinois, USA. The following year, the word "Zonta" was registered with the Trademark Division of the United States government in Washington, D.C. The word "Zonta" is a Native American word (Lakota-Sioux) meaning honest and trustworthy and exemplifies the underlying philosophies of Zonta International. Zonta International actively works to promote the status of women through its long-standing relationship with the United Nations and some of its agencies. It holds consultative status with the United States of America and maintains 10 United Nations' representatives, making it a powerful force in the development of international policy. Service is the cornerstone of Zonta, both internationally and locally. An estimated 500,00 people receive help from Zonta's new or continuing international and local service projects.
